My first Silhouette Project and a little Giveaway!

About a month ago I took the plunge and purchased a new Silhouette. I already had a Wishblade, which is basically the same machine, only the Silhouette has more features and is much more user friendly. I HAD to have the Wishblade way back when, and my family was sweet enough to buy it for me for my birthday! I think the problem was that the machine was just too new and all the little quirks had not been worked out of it yet.  I had been having issues cutting things lately and I figured if I was going to buy new software to upgrade it, I might as well just buy a new machine altogether. So when Gail at My Repurposed Life, posted a "deal" for the Silhouette, I bought one.

Okay...now go back a couple of weeks when I told you that I found a super cute Halloween decoration at a local boutique called, Designer Blvd.  I wish I would have snapped a picture with my phone, but I did not even think about it at the time.  Anyhoo, it was basically blocks of wood that spelled out "Halloween"...the price tag, $70.  WHAT?!  Well, you know me (or maybe you don't), my first thought after experiencing sticker shock was, "that would be super simple to make!".  Since I didn't even have to take a picture of the item I was going to be copying using as inspiration, that should tell you something!  If I remember correctly however, their version was just painted pieces of wood...I added scrapbook paper as a background for my letters!  The letters are cut from vinyl using my Silhouette...easy peasy!  These are pretty good size...the word "Halloween", for example, is about 3 ft. long (I forgot to measure before it found it's new home at Melissa's).

Whatcha' think...pretty cute, huh?  (Sorry about the quality of that second picture, don't know what was going on there).  Trust me when I say, these pieces of wood have a very "primitive" look...they are not perfectly straight, but I thought that added to the character (yep, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!)

When I tell you what this cost to make, you will probably fall off your chair (keep in mind that $70 price tag!).  The wood was less than $3, for a piece that I was able to cut 17 blocks of wood.  I already had all of the paper from my scrapbooking/card making days, but we all know how cheap that is!  Paint was about $3 and I already had the Perfect Paper Adhesive (you could use Mod Podge or any white glue for that matter!)  So, whatcha' think now...even better, huh?

Since I want to share my love for Halloween, I am going to give away one Halloween themed, block word (the word of your choice!) to one lucky winner!  You can enter by doing either one or both of the following:

1. Become a Follower

2.  Leave me a comment telling me what Halloween "word" you would choose (don't worry, I won't hold you to it, you can always change your mind later!)

You have till Wednesday, September 7th to enter (Blocks will be mailed out approximately one week later).  Winner will be announce on Thursday, September 8th. Be sure to check back...I will NOT be notifying the winner, if no response within 24 hours, a new winner will be chosen!

Good luck!

  12. Your blocks turned out super! I would really like to have a Silhouette but then I think I would overdo it -- vinyl all over the home. Thanks for the opportunity to win some of your word blocks -- I think homecrafted items are the best. If I won, I would pick "Halloween." Joni

  28. Ter, this is Barb's sister-in-law, We really enjoyed your cookies at the anniversary party. She has been tutoring me on cookie decorating. On another topic, I LOVE your studio. We just remodeled and finished ours, but not nearly as large or gorgeous as yours. Well done! Janet Butcher
