The forgotten chair!

I told you way back when that I had something to share that was quite possibly the craziest thing that I have ever painted! Not surprising that I totally forgot, but it popped into my head this morning while I was trying to figure out something to share with you today! You have seen most of the pieces that are in my guestroom, but you have not seen the makeover of the chair that is in there. This is what it looked like when I took it home from Savers:

I really can't remember but I think I paid about $10, but no more than $13, for it.  I LOVED the details of this chair and I was sure that it had a story to tell.  It was weird to me that there was so much wear on the wood part, but the cushion was in perfect condition.  Seriously, look at this:

I would have guessed that it had been out in the weather elements, but there was absolutely no signs of it on the cushion...strange, to say the least!  Anyhoo, I have to admit, I was feeling a bit over ambitious to think I could take on this much re-upholstery work...after all, other than seat cushions (which I could easily do in my sleep...I was limited to these two chairs:

Pretty easy when all was said and done.

So back to my story...I put off working on it for a long time!  I would think, I could do this but then when I looked closer, I chickened out.  Enter this product Simply Spray Fabric Paint.  Now, I had seen this product used around Blogland, but I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical...I mean, who wouldn't be?  Spraying actual furniture cushions had to be crazy, right?

Since I was a chicken and had already ruled out re-upholstering myself, my only other option was to have it done...but seriously, a chair for a guestroom, really?  I am much too cheap for that!  So what the heck, what did I have to lose...$13, if I totally screwed it up...I have definitely wasted more on projects!

So, long story short...how do you like me now?

I know, crazy right?!  Now, I also know that you are dying to know my opinion of this product (No?...well I feel obligated to tell you anyway!)  I honestly do not think that if I hadn't told you that the cushion had paint on it, you would never know.  Yes, it is slightly "stiffer" than it started out, but not enough that when you sit on it, it would bother you!

Would I use this product again...absolutely!  The only thing that I did wrong was use small cans of this stuff (available at M's, J's and HL)...if you are doing a project of any size, I recommend shopping online and buying the bigger cans to cut your costs.

And because I think you deserve one more peek:

ETA:  I have had people contact me about "recipes" for using regular latex paint for this project.  I did try one such recipe (Latex paint and Fabric Medium) but it did NOT work for me.  I tried it on the underneath side of the bottom cushion...it was streaky AND very stiff/rough.  Please don't let my results discourage you from trying, but please report back...I would love to know what I could do differently to make it work!

  4. You are too right! Great minds do think alike! We are repeating each others projects pretty consistently back and forth! I love how your chair turned out! It's got beautiful curves. I was looking at the simply spray fabric paint yesterday and I'm just not sure what color I should make my seat cushion. I'm so indecisive it will probably set like it is for a few months (years) before I "finish" it. Thanks for sharing Terri! I love it!

  5. I have seen several blogs where this has been done. I am itching to try it out for myself. I am like you I have a chair that I have had for a while but I just can't bring myself to re-upholster. Spray paint to the rescue.
