Table for four, please!

I still didn't get a good, sunny day to take pictures of the kitchen table, but I was tired of waiting!  I figured you were beginning to think I made this whole "table and chairs" story up because I had been promising pictures for so long, so we just went some, not so great, pics!

Let's look at what the table looked like when I first saw it at the Goodwill:

Ignore the chair, it has no relevance.  It is your basic, "seen it a million times", kitchen table.  Kelli wanted a farmhouse table for her kitchen/dinette.  After I checked to make sure that the top could be easily removed without disturbing the bottom, I knew this was the perfect table to use for our project!  Here is what it looks like now:

Let me start by saying I looked at MANY tutorials online and my version is somewhat of a collaboration of all of them.  I did not use any one tutorial to complete my project...it was a matter of looking at pictures and seeing what worked for me.

Having said that...as projects go, this one was pretty simple.  She wanted to keep it white so, the first thing I did was give it a couple of coats of ASCP in "Pure White", followed up with a good coat of wax.

I don't really have any "in progress" pictures of building the top, but I basically built it from the underneath side.  First, I sanded the boards well, and added a little extra "distressing" using a hammer and screwdriver.  I laid the boards on the garage floor and using scraps of wood that I had in the garage I screwed in cross braces, which held all my pieces of wood together.  It looked something like this:

For the end pieces that are going the opposite direction, I used small metal brackets to secure to the long strips of wood.  This is what mine looked like after the top was assembled:

Next, I stained it using Minwax Wood Stain in Jacobean.  I LOVE the color it came out:

Because Kelli did not want a lot of shine (keeping true to an old farmhouse table look) I used several coats of Minwax Wipe On Polyurethane.

Now I was ready to attach the bottom to the top, so once again I flipped the piece over on the garage floor and did the same with the table base...centering it on the top.  I used the same screws and screw holes that the original top was mounted with.  VOILA!  Easy peasy!

Now for the chairs.  We decided we wanted the "eclectic" look for the chairs so we did not want them to match.  Two of the chairs were purchased from the same person on CL for $10 each...and were in pretty rough shape to say the least.  The other two were purchased on separate occasions from the Goodwill...for $5 each!

Each got a few coats of  paint and finished with wax.  Remember the cool burlap I showed you from HL the other day?  Well, they also have some new, fun solid colors as well.  We went with the bright yellow to match her chevron wall.  Here's a closer view of each chair:

Yes...this last cushion did give me fits...I tugged and pulled every which way, but to no avail!  So for a little added character, we have a few wrinkles! 

I'd say not bad for a first try and don't get me wrong...this table is far from perfect and would probably make a true craftsman cringe, but I think I am safe in saying that Kelli loves it and that is what it is all about, right?!

I can give you a good estimate of total supply costs (sorry, I never keep a good record of stuff like this...usually because it takes me several trips to the store to gather all my supplies)

Total cost...around $113...not bad,eh?!

And because no table would be complete without some cookies to eat at it....

Next up...a little project my hubby tackled in our laundry room!  Yep, you read that right...my hubby!  Way outside his comfort zone.
