A DIY Wedding Gift!

As projects go, this one was relatively simple!

It started when Kelli decided she wanted to make her friend Laurel, a customized wedding present.  This was her inspiration:

Since Laurel's "husband to be" is into surfing, this seemed to be the perfect idea.

I started with the same cheap inexpensive fencing that I buy from Home Depot and so so many projects with!  I cut them to 33 inches and assembled...easy peasy!

Yes, I did assemble in my craft room...it was way too hot out in the garage!  Next, I gave it a quick stain using Minwax, "Weathered Oak"

In case you are wondering...I did not stain in the house...even I have my limits so it was a quick application out in the garage.

Kelli and I had already picked out a surfboard image from Silhouette of America, so once it was purchased I enlarged it to the size we needed and cut it out using my Cameo.  Keep in mind, this was 33 inches long, so I needed a pretty big stencil.  I cut it in three pieces and then pieced it together as one.  Because of the size we were working with, I chose to cut the image out of cardstock instead of vinyl...I just felt it would be easier to work with on the board.

We were putting the couple's last name on the board, so we picked a font and cut that out as well, this time using vinyl.

Now it was time to start painting.  We used ASCP in "Old White" which we applied with a small foam roller...making sure not to get too much paint on the roller to seep under the paper stencil.

Next we removed the big stencil and the vinyl letters.  We also added the wedding date in the lower right hand corner using Valspar "Nautical".  After that was dry, I went over the entire board with another coat of the stain and finished it off with Minwax  "Wipe on Poly".   Added "hanging" hardware on the back and VOILA!

Obviously we were going for a very aged and weathered look, but look how easy it would be to customize the way you might want it to look...with virtually any theme or interest.

You do not need any big tools to complete a project like this.  If you do not have a saw, have the wood cut at Home Depot!  This was a very inexpensive project that you could do for any occasion!

I'm told they LOVED it!

Till next time!

This is so cool! I have a Cameo on my wish list but probably won't be getting one anytime soon. I always love your projects.
